Having qualified on the USS Greenfish SS-351, a Guppy 3A, it is impressive on the work you have done on her! I saw the YouTube video "Submarine USS Drum Unsung Hero Of WWII" that brought me to your sight! Most people don't realize that table you are sitting at, w Back Gammon Top, seats 6 at meal time. The small window is where the food came out of the kitchen to be passed around, home style, to the crew! About 5' toward the camera was the crews racks. There were more racks in the forward Torpedo Room and in the After Torpedo Room! This was the After Battery and under the deck was massive batteries! This is a living history that words can't describe! You are doing a great job here! Hope to see you all this year (2015)! Larry McCann ST-1(SS) SS-351

Had a wonderful time touring the boat in 2006 and walking where my father worked and lived during the 1st patrol. I was born in Portsmouth NH where the boat was built. Dad was on sea trials on Dec 7, 1941. Great web site.

Received and read the book Three Lives of the USS Drum. Page 13 on the line for Nesbert D. Baker there were 5 letters addressed to him found in the galley on March 2008. I am Nesbert Bakers daughter and wanted to know if we could see copies of these letters or the originals to have for his photo album. Nesbert was on the first 6 patrols and I really enjoyed reading about them. I wish he was still alive to read this book, dad passed away in December of 1996.

I didn't know you existed until yesterday. My wife and I will be visiting the Drum in a couple of weeks. I'm very excited about seeing it. Hope you'll sell me a rivet or some piece of scrap! Wonderful that you're saving this piece of history. Wish I lived closer so I could help. Thanks!!

Hi All,
What a wonderful thing you are doing to preserve the memory of our 52 lost boats and their crews! Thank you!
I'm familiar with the Bowfin, Pompanito, Cavalla, and Cod, having been aboard all of them as a visitor, but had no clue the Drum still existed. It is a well kept secret. :)
I wear a t-shirt everyday celebrating the USS Wahoo, SS-238, lost in action, on 10-11-43, and found, by Russians, on 7-28-06. I would like to add a Drum T to my collection. Is one available?

I had a wonderful visit with Tom Bowser and Leslie Waters today. They are my new heros. They have accomplished and continue to accomplish an amazing restoration to the USS Drum. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this fine submarine and its veterans who served our country well. You have saved an invaluable part of our country's history.

I was one of the Alabama school kids who helped raise money to bring the USS Alabama to Mobile; my dad took me as an early visitor to the USS Drum. Although I now live 250 miles inland, I've been back several times. I applaud your restoration work on a beautiful lady. You make us all proud.

Visited the wonderful submarine in July 2014. I thought that the sub was really cool but cramped. I give it 5 stars as a rating.

I saw the Drum along with the BB Alabama over 22 years ago. I am extremely impressed with the restoration that has been done by all the volunteers, especially Lesley and Tom. It's simply amazing and a testament to what vision and a "can do" attitude can accomplish! Many thanks to all who have donated their time, materials and money to help keep this ship alive! I am going to have to make a trip back down to see her in person again.

Hello from Montreal, Canada. I found the video of Drum on YouTube more or less by accident, then looked up the website. You're doing a fantastic job of restoring this boat. It's a fantastic tribute to the crews who sailed in her. If I'm ever in your part of the world, I would love to come and see her.

Great site!
My grand-uncle Edwin F. Mitchell served as an electrician's mate on the USS Drum until being transferred to the USS Halibut in December 1943. I too have heard a few of the stories of that 8th war patrol. When I saw the video, I heard one of the men say that he didn't remember anyone greeting them at the dock. Edwin's brother Charlie, who also served in the navy, happened to be in port when word came around that the Drum was coming in. He snuck away and got to go over and see the boat dock and see his brother for a bit. I spoke with Charlie recently about this event and he clearly remembers the condition of the boat as she arrived.
Thank You to all the veterans out there and to the great folks at the museum for all of your hard work.

My husband an I was recently passing threw Mobile, Al. on a trip from Biloxi, MS. to Pensacola, Fl. We seen the signs on the interstate advertising for the battleship memorial park. So we decided to stop in an check things out. We are both very excited that we did stop in. We both decide it was the best part of our trip,an it wasn't even planned. Wow it is like taking a step back in time. I would very much recommend for people to stop in an see these amazing pieces of our history.Even if they are not into history or military history. it is just amazing to be able to walk threw an see an to be able to just imagine what it was like for the service men. I have to say that the people that are work to keep these ttimeless pieces of history looking good are doing an amazing job. Keep up the great work.

How fortunate I was to be able to tour the Drum with my WWII sub Dad on May 2, 2013, (the day after his 92nd birthday!)for the second time in our lives. This tour was better than the first, as we had Tom and Leslie in tow with us and they were so attentive to Dad's every word! Ted Szymanski, known as "SKI" on the boat, made 8 War patrols on her - 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. He can sure give a great tour - I need to upload a video I took of him this trip onto You Tube I suppose! I still love listening to his stories, I know he has some for each patrol. I love you Dad and thank you and all military active/retired for your service to our great USA! God Bless you all!
